Night Watch

NEOMI is a new initiative at the European Space Agency. At its heart is a fundamental reconnection to innovative blue-skies Earth Observation Science by empowering a new generation of Space Mission Lead Investigators that will champion future Earth Observation satellite missions. It is designed to provide a framework to shape new scientific ideas, and to create more opportunities to develop new bold, state-of-the art EO missions within ESA.

Our NEOMI, called “Night Watch”, addresses observations of optical band light at night. The subject has been of increasing interest in remote sensing in recent years , especially due to the wide range of application areas that are made possible with nighttime light observations.

Night Watch aims at solving most of the problems that current data sources have. As a satellite it provides better spatial coverage than ground measurements, and also has better temporal coverage than aerial photography. Compared to other satellites, the goal is to provide freely available calibrated data covering the entire dynamic range in several spectral bands with a much better spatial resolution than the most used sensor, the VIIRS-DNB.
